Environmental Benefits Explained…

What does PLA stand for?

PLA stands for Polylactic acid, which is a bioplastic made from lactic acid. The lactic acid is derived from renewable sources. This type of bioplastic naturally degrades when exposed to the environment. All our cups are PLA coated.

What does it mean when packaging is biodegradable?

Biodegradable packaging breaks down quickly and returns to nature in the presence of oxygen, without needing special conditions to do so. This packaging has the ability convert into carbon dioxide, water, mineral salts or new biomass. It will not lay in a landfill for hundreds of years. Our straws are biodegradable.

What is compostable packaging?

Compostable packaging breaks down within a few months when placed in a compost pile or facility. It benefits the soil by forming a decayed organic substance, to create a nutrient-rich fertiliser. Like biodegradable packaging, compostable packaging will not lay in landfill for hundreds of years. Our forks, knifes and spoons are 100% compostable.

What is ‘Bagasse’?

Bagasse’ is a natural by-product of sugarcane refinement. It is the fibre that remains after sugarcane stalks are crushed to extract their juice. It requires minimal processing and elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleaching to turn it into a woven high-strength paper that is biodegradable and compostable. These types of products are more energy efficient to produce in comparison to pulping wood for paper, or manufacturing polystyrene from oil. All our containers are produced using Bagasse’.
